Rabbits – a life worth living

Rabbit Zoe & Lily

At present there are thought to be about 35,000 unwanted pet rabbits in the UK. Often they are bought as a child’s pet and unfortunately children can soon tire of them; healthy rabbits can live for 7-10 years. Rabbits are more of a spectator pet – a pet to look at and enjoy by watching them enjoy their life. As they are naturally a prey animal they do not really like to be handled and picked up. If you want a pet to stroke a cat or a dog may be better.

If you would like to offer one of our rescue rabbits a home please feel free to ‘phone me (01359-242343) and come and visit our rabbits. You will need to meet the following RSPCA requirements and I will also need to do a home check.

·                   Rabbits should not be kept on their own, as they are social animals. We only home rabbits as a pair or in groups or to match up with a rabbit you may already have. Our rabbits are all neutered; if you have a rabbit that needs a friend it will also need to be neutered to prevent fighting. We do not re-home rabbits and guinea pigs together as they are different species with different requirements.

·                   Rabbits need to be kept safe overnight in a large hutch, at least 5’ by 2’ by 2’ or preferably in part of a shed or Wendy house.

·                   Rabbits need daily access to a large enclosure, at least 8’ by 4’ by 4' or preferably your garden.

·                   Rabbits need to be able to express their natural behaviour – burrowing, digging, hiding, sitting in the sun, grazing and exercising, mainly at dawn and dusk.

·                   Rabbits need to be able to eat grass, a quality pellet based rabbit food, some greens and lots of hay.

·                   Rabbits need vaccinations to help protect them from myxomatosis and regular check ups with a vet.

·                   Rabbit accommodation needs a regular clean out and your rabbits need regular checks for any problems such as tooth problems or fly strike.

Thousands of pet rabbits are kept as prisoners in tiny hutches on their own in the UK. Please give me a ring for further advice, to pick up some information leaflets, to offer a rabbit a home or to re-home an unwanted pet rabbit. Help us create a better deal for pet rabbits!

Our rabbits are all neutered and vaccinated and we ask for a minimum donation of £20.00 per rabbit to help cover our costs (neutering and vaccinating costs us approximately £50.00).
